Hernandez Receives 2020 Alumni Excellence Award
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Mitchell College graduate Kelsey Hernandez was selected as the female recipient of the 2020 Alumni Excellence Award, as announced by the Department of Athletics on Wednesday morning during its virtual awards ceremony.
The Alumni Excellence Award is given annually to the man and woman graduates (seniors) recommended by the Department of Athletics who achieved the highest degree of competence in sports, while also attaining outstanding academic records.
Hernandez was a two-year letterwinner on the women's basketball team who majored in criminal justice. She played in 51 games and made 48 starts while amassing career totals of 614 points, 104 assists and 90 steals, and over the past two seasons she's led the team in three-point field goal percentage while draining 81 threes. A two-time all-conference selection, she helped the Mariners make back-to-back semifinals appearances at the NECC Championship. She also ranked among the top 10 in the NECC in steals, three-pointers, three-point field goal percentage, free throws and free throw percentage in her final season. She graduated from Mitchell this past May with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.13.
The 2020 Mitchell Athletics Banquet was canceled in May due to COVID-19. While the original goal was to reschedule the event before the end of the year, the decision was made to shift the award ceremony to a virtual setting for the safety of all involved. All award recipients were determined by a vote of the coaches and staff in the department
