Women’s Basketball Falls to Lasell in GNAC Opener
NEWTON, Mass. – Junior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) scored a team-high 13 points and freshman N'Tai Teague (Houston, TX) pulled down 13 rebounds, yet the Mitchell College women's basketball team dropped their opening game of the new year, falling to Lasell University 68-39 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Lasell Athletic Conference.
Teague fell just one point shy of a double-double, netting nine points for the Mariners, while fellow freshman Jade Hypolite (Houston, TX) finished with seven points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Sophomore guard Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) chipped in four points and two rebounds off the bench, as Mitchell dropped to 0-1 in conference play.
After the Mariners drew first blood and jumped ahead by three on a long-range basket by freshman Jordyn Streitmatter (Brester, Mass.), the Lasers outscored Mitchell 17-9 across the remainder of the opening quarter, and held a 36-19 advantage at halftime.
Kiara Cerruti of Lasell led all scorers with 14 points, as the Lasers outrebounded the Mariners 61-37 and received 41 points from their bench, with Mitchell tallying just four bench points. Mia Sullivan Sanders added 10 points for Lasell, who saw scoring contributions from 14 different players.
The Mariners (2-5, 0-1 GNAC) return to their home court for the first time since November 12, when they host Johnson & Wales University in a GNAC clash on Saturday, January 11, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Lasers (5-6, 1-0 GNAC) will look to stay unbeaten on conference play when they face Colby-Sawyer College on the road on Tuesday, January 7.
