WBB Sweeps Final Weekly Awards
MANSFIELD, Mass. – Two members of the Mitchell College women's basketball team were honored by the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Senior forward Amina Wiley was named NECC Player of the Week while sophomore guard Alexia Watson was tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week. Wiley earned the honor for the third week in a row and the sixth time this season (Nov. 8, 15, Jan. 24, Feb. 7, 14), while Watson was recognized for the second time (Dec. 20).
Wiley averaged 25.0 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game as the Mariners went 2-1 to close out the regular season. She had 20 points and seven rebounds in a road win at Lesley before putting up 23 points and 15 boards against Eastern Nazarene. She capped the week with a career-high 32 points to go with 15 rebounds and three steals in a Senior Day win over Lesley. Wiley shot 54 percent for the week and averaged 26.7 minutes per contest.
Watson averaged 5.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game off the bench last week. She finished with 12 points (all from beyond the arc) and two rebounds in the win at Lesley, and then hit up the Lynx for five points, three boards and two steals in the home victory.
Wiley has played in 21 games this season and leads the NECC in scoring (19.5 ppg), rebounding (11.0 rpg), field goals (178), field goal percentage (.567) and double-doubles (13). Watson has played in all 23 games and made 14 starts, averaging 6.0 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest.
Mitchell (10-13 overall, 2-4 NECC) is the third seed for the 2022 NECC Championship. The Mariners will face second-seeded Eastern Nazarene College in the semifinals on Thursday, February 24 at 7 p.m.
