Santos Earns GNAC Player of the Week Honors
WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week for the sport of women's basketball for the week ending November 26th, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
The senior forward recorded her fourth consecutive double-double to begin the season, scoring 28 points and grabbing 22 rebounds, as the Mariners defeated Western Connecticut State University in their lone non-conference game of the week. The victory marked the first time that the Mitchell women's basketball team was able to defeat Western Connecticut, having previously posted an 0-6 record in the Division III era of the program.
Santos added three assists and one steal, while shooting 20-24 from the free throw line, which included knocking down nine of 12 free throws in the final quarter. The 20 free throws made by Santos were a Division III era program record, as were the 24 free throw attempts. Heading into the new week, Santos is third in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 22 points per game, and leads the conference in rebounding, pulling down 15.5 per contest.
The Mariners (2-2, 0-0 GNAC) return to play on Tuesday, November 28th, when they travel for a non-contest road game against Salve Regina University. Mitchell will then kick off GNAC action with a men's and women's home doubleheader against Lasell University on Saturday, December 2nd, with the men tipping off at 1:00 pm and the women scheduled to follow at 3:00 pm.
