Santos Lands on NEWBA Weekly First-Team
NORTHHAMPTON, Mass. – On the heels of being named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week for the first time this season, Mitchell senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned regional honors on Tuesday night, landing on the New England Women's Basketball Association's (NEWBA) Weekly First-Team.
She is the first Mitchell player to land on either the first or second team in the weekly selections by NEWBA this season. Each week during the regular season, the organization honors a player and rookie of the week from the region, and selects a five player first team along with a five player second team.
Santos dominated in Mitchell's lone game on the week, registering a double-double with 28 points and 22 rebounds as the Mariners topped Western Connecticut State University for the first time in the Division III era of the program. She added three assists and one steal, while shooting 20-24 from the free throw line, including nine of 12 free throws in the final quarter to help seal the victory. The 20 free throws made by Santos were a Division III era program record for Mitchell, as were the 24 free throw attempts.
Through five games, Santos ranks second in the GNAC in scoring, averaging 22.2 points per game, and leads the conference in rebounding, averaging 13.8 per contest. Among all players in the GNAC, her 4.4 offensive rebounds per game ranks second, while her 9.4 rebounds per game on the defensive end has her alone in first place. Averaging 2.4 steals per game, Santos finds herself in the top 10 in the conference in that category as well.
The Mariners (2-3, 0-0 GNAC) return to play on Saturday, December 2nd, when they open up GNAC play with a home game against Lasell University at 3:00 pm.
