Women’s Basketball Shoots Past Lesley for Season’s First Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team rode a barrage of three-pointers and a dominant first half to secure a 71–58 victory over Lesley University on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Yarnall Athletic Center, marking the first collegiate head coaching win for Mitchell's Tory Kennedy.
The Mariners set the tone early, outscoring the Lynx 22–8 in the second quarter to take a 37–17 lead into halftime.
Senior guard Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) led all scorers with 21 points, knocking down five triples while adding four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) provided a spark from deep as well, connecting on 5-of-9 from three-point range en route to 19 points.
Freshman forward Delaney Fifield (Whately, Mass.) anchored the interior with seven points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks, while sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals in a complete 40-minute performance.
Lesley found its rhythm in the second half, outscoring Mitchell 41–34 after intermission. The Lynx were paced by Alawnah Dunda's 13 points and five rebounds, Leila Chisholm's 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and Savannah Gravitt's all-around line of 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Mitchell shot 35.8% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range (12-for-32), compared to Lesley's 30.9% overall and 25% from deep (7-for-28). The Mariners also converted 11-of-13 free throws (84.6%).
The Mariners (1–1, 0–0 GNAC) will look to build on the performance when they return to action Friday, November 14, hosting crosstown rival Connecticut College in non-league play at 5:00 p.m
