STANDISH, ME – The Mitchell College women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time in 2026 on Saturday afternoon, falling 78–39 to Saint Joseph's College (ME) at the Harold Alfond Center in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams.
The Monks jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first seven points of the contest while building a 24–11 advantage at the end of the first quarter and a 41–18 edge by intermission. The Mariners were held to 21 total points in the second half, as SJC used a balanced offensive attack, with five different players scoring in double figures, led by a game-high 15 points from Elisabeth Stapelfeld. Logan Brown added 12 points and eight rebounds, hitting 4-of-9 from three-point range.
Junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) powered Mitchell with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double, while sophomore Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) netted 13 points.
The hosts dominated in the paint, outrebounding Mitchell 70–40, while the Mariners also allowed 20 second-chance points.
The Mariners (2–8, 0–1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they face Rivier University in a GNAC road matchup on Wednesday, January 14, with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
