Strong Second Half Pushes NEC Past Women’s Basketball
HENNIKER, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team came up short in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road contest on Saturday afternoon, falling to New England College, 81–53, inside Bridges Gymnasium.
The Mariners fell behind early in the opening quarter as the Pilgrims jumped out to a 10–2 lead. Mitchell responded by closing the frame on an 11–4 run, capped by a late three-pointer from senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.), to finish the quarter trailing by just one, 14–13.
Mitchell carried that momentum into the second quarter, knocking down a pair of three-pointers early to take a five-point lead with 7:26 remaining in the half. NEC answered with a strong response and took a 34–26 advantage into the intermission.
NEC kept its foot on the gas in the second half, outscoring Mitchell 21–12 in the third quarter to seize control of the game. The Pilgrims continued to pull away in the fourth, winning the final period by 11 points to secure the victory.
Sophomore Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) led the Mariners with 16 points, connecting on four three-pointers while adding five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Beddoe followed with 15 points and four rebounds, while junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, TX) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
Camryn Lewis paced the Pilgrims with a game-high 18 points and 17 rebounds.
The Mariners (2–12, 0–5 GNAC) will continue their three-game road trip with a GNAC matchup at Regis College on Wednesday, January 28, at 5:00 p.m.
