Women’s Basketball Falls in Season Opener to UMass Boston
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team opened its 2025–26 campaign at home on Saturday afternoon, battling early before visiting UMass Boston pulled away for an 85–61 non-conference victory at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Senior guard Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) led the Mariners with a game-high 18 points, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc and going 7-for-8 at the free-throw line. Sophomore guard Jordyn Streitmatter (Brewster, Mass.) added 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while freshman Delaney Fifield (Whately, Mass.) anchored the frontcourt with 10 rebounds and eight points.
Mitchell came out energized in front of the home crowd, trading baskets with the Beacons throughout a competitive first quarter. Beddoe's early trips to the line and Streitmatter's outside shooting kept the Mariners within striking distance, as UMass Boston led 25–19 after ten minutes.
The Mariners continued to hang tough in the second frame. A Beddoe three-pointer at the 9:00 mark brought Mitchell within a single possession, and she then knocked down a free throw with 7:18 on the clock to knot the score at 27–27. However, the Beacons then found their rhythm, pulling ahead 47–38 at intermission.
Mitchell's offense cooled after the break as the Beacons' defensive pressure began to take hold, limiting the Mariners to 10 points in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth as UMass Boston pulled away behind a 54 percent shooting performance from the field.
Sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) provided a spark defensively, collecting five steals and dishing three assists, while junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas) chipped in six points and two assists. Freshman forward Ariahna Headen (Rogers, Conn.) added six points and five rebounds off the bench.
As a team, the Mariners shot 37.5% from the floor, hit eight three-pointers, and made 17 of 23 free throws (74%).
Six players scored in double figures for UMass Boston, with Sabanna Berrios, Jorddia Tautalatasi, and Madison Haggett each netting 12 points apiece.
The Mariners (0–1, 0–0 GNAC) will look to pick up their first win when they return to the court at home on Wednesday, November 12, for a non-league game against Lesley University. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
