Women’s Basketball Topped by Camels in Battle Between Crosstown Foes
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's basketball team was unable to slow a highly efficient Connecticut College offense on Friday night, falling 85–41 in a non-conference battle between the crosstown foes at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
Connecticut College set the tone early and finished the night shooting 53.1% from the field and 38.2% from three. Catherine Cole led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting, while Mia Xerras added 12 points and 6 assists—all from beyond the arc (4-for-7). Lily Funk provided a spark off the bench, scoring 12 points on a perfect 5-for-5 effort, including two three-pointers. The Camels' depth proved critical, as 14 players scored and the team recorded 23 assists on 34 made field goals.
Mitchell stayed within striking distance early, trailing 19–13 after the first quarter behind interior work from freshman Ariahna Headen (Rogers, Conn.), who finished with 6 points, 5 rebounds, and a block. However, the Mariners were outscored 23–8 in the second quarter as the Camels extended their lead, and Connecticut College later took the third quarter 22–9 to further widen the gap.
Offensively, Mitchell was led by junior Inonda Peterson (Houston, Texas), who posted 10 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Jade Hypolite (Houston, Texas) contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds, while senior Jamya Beddoe (New London, Conn.) added 7 points, 3 boards, and 2 steals across 40 minutes. The Mariners shot 26.9% from the field and 2-for-17 from three, but found success at the line (11-for-16).
Defensively, Mitchell generated 7 steals—including two each from Beddoe, Headen, and Hypolite—but Connecticut College's balanced scoring and 41–24 rebounding advantage limited opportunities for the Mariners.
The Mariners (1–2, 0–0 GNAC) continue their early-season non-league slate on Sunday, November 16, when they host Roger Williams University at 1:00 p.m.
