Women’s Lacrosse Drops Home Opener to UMaine-Farmington
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's lacrosse team fell to the University of Maine at Farmington, 18–6, in its home opener on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead, scoring five times in the opening quarter, but the Mariners stayed within striking distance behind a strong start from junior Chloe Jennings (New London, Conn.), who recorded a hat trick in the first to keep Mitchell within 5–3 after one.
UMaine-Farmington pulled away in the second quarter, erupting for 11 goals to take a 16–4 lead into halftime.
Mitchell found the back of the net once in each of the final two quarters, as Jennings added her fourth and fifth goals of the game in the third, and senior Lauren Cordero (Selden, N.Y.) scored in the fourth.
Jennings led the Mariners with five goals, seven draw controls, and seven ground balls. Cordero added a goal and three ground balls, while senior Halie Jennings (New London, Conn.) recorded an assist.
In goal, senior Arrianna Stark (Schenectady, N.Y.) made 10 saves in 55:28 of action, while freshman Jay Minner (Milford, Conn.) saw time in relief.
UMaine-Farmington was paced by Ruby McMinis with five goals, while Lauren Girouard added three goals and Sadie Harvey contributed a goal and two assists.
Mitchell totaled 16 ground balls, 11 draw controls, and 14 shots in the contest, while UMaine-Farmington held advantages with 29 ground balls, 14 draw controls, and 31 shots.
The Mariners (0–2, 0–1 GNAC) will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, March 21, when they host Albertus Magnus at 11:00 a.m.
