LAX's Knowles Named USILA Scholar All-American
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College senior Desmond Knowles was one of 144 Division III men's lacrosse players who was named Scholar All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association earlier this week.
Knowles becomes the first Mariner to earn the distinction. The four-time New England Collegiate Conference Academic All-Conference selection also garnered academic honors from the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association earlier this week.
Knowles capped a four-year career at Mitchell by earning all-conference honors while being named NECC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He led the league with 31 caused turnovers and recorded team highs of 92 ground balls and 58 face-off wins. He also contributed a career-high eight goals and two assists on the offensive end.
In 1989 the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americas are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
A USILA Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). He will have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution, and to college lacrosse both on and off the field. He must also be an All-American, a member of a North/South team, or an outstanding league or conference player.
