Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's lacrosse team opened up their season with a 21-1 loss on the road against Albertus Magnus College on Sunday afternoon in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game of the spring at Celentano Field.
Mitchell freshman Nathan Mahoney (Stonington, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game with just over two minutes gone by off an assist by senior Jon Parra-Tobey (New London, Conn.). The Falcons responded with seven unanswered goals in the first quarter and held a 12-1 edge at halftime.
DaKari Coleman had a team-high eight goals for the Falcons, while Jeremy Tremblay found the back of the net seven times, and Cooper Strecker dished out nine assists.
Sophomore Cameron Haefs (Cary, IL) logged all 60 minutes in the cage for Mitchell and turned away 18 shots.
Nick Duryea made 11 saves in the win for Albertus, who forced 45 Mitchell turnovers. As a team, the Falcons scooper 75 ground balls to just 28 for the Mariners, and were winners on 16 of 25 face offs.
Senior Keeano Gonzalez (New London, Conn.) scooped nine ground balls to lead the Mariners, while he and Nathan Mahoney each caused three turnovers.
The Mariners (0-1, 0-1 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, April 5, with a GNAC showdown against Lasell University. The Falcons (3-2, 1-0 GNAC) travel to Lasell University for a conference matchup on Saturday, March 22.
