NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team fell to New England College 2-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Senior Darren Molta broke open a scoreless game in the 57th minute of play off an assist by sophomore Santiago Sanchez to put the Pilgrims ahead 1-0. Sanchez then tacked on his second goal of the season with 25:18 remaining, propelling NEC to their first victory of the fall.
Senior Dylan Lucey (Lebanon, Conn.) led the Mariners with five shots, two on goal, as Mitchell registered seven shots on the day to 22 by the Pilgrims. NEC also outpaced the Mariners in corner kick opportunities 7-2.
Mitchell senior goalkeeper Dylan Kinsella (Waterbury, Conn.) had four stops in the first half for the Mariners before sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) entered the game in the second half and finished with four saves.
NEC sophomore goalkeeper Lukas Tate, playing in just his second career start, tallied four saves on the day.
The Mariners (0-3-1, 0-2 GNAC) will look to snap a three-game slide on Tuesday, September 17, when they travel for a GNAC match against Johnson & Wales University. The Pilgrims (1-2-1, 1-1 GNAC) jump right back into action and host Lesley University in a non-league game on Sunday, September 15.
