DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team fell 5-1 to UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday evening at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs built an early advantage, netting four goals in the first half to take control of the match. Leonardo Alfama opened the scoring in the 24th minute, followed by tallies from Daniel Jordan, Derrick Camara, and Nick Scanlon to give UMass Dartmouth a 4-0 lead at the break.
Scanlon struck again just five minutes into the second half to extend the margin, but the Mariners continued to battle. In the 73rd minute, junior midfielder Diego Chavez (Meriden, Conn.) put Mitchell on the scoreboard with his third goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins (Windsor, Conn.) finished with four saves against nine shots on goal. Offensively, the Mariners recorded four total shots, with Chavez providing two and senior Flavio Alvarado (New London, Conn.) adding one on target.
The Mariners (1-5-0, 0-0-0 GNAC) return to action on Saturday, September 20, when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the road at Colby-Sawyer College. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
