CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team came up short on Wednesday night, falling 4-2 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup at Elms College.
The Mariners struck first in the 28th minute when sophomore Diego Chavez (Meriden, Conn.) converted a feed from freshman Oscar Mendoza-Soto (Willimantic, Conn.) to give Mitchell a 1-0 lead. Elms responded early in the second half, tying the game in the 61st minute before taking control with three unanswered goals between the 68th and 87th minutes.
Sophomore Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.) netted a late goal for Mitchell in the 72nd minute, narrowing the deficit to 3-2, but the Blazers added an insurance goal in the 87th to secure the 4-2 victory.
Mitchell outshot Elms 18-16 and recorded eight corner kicks compared to four for the hosts. Freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Tiene (Fairfield, Conn.) made seven saves, facing 11 shots on goal.
The Mariners (1-8-1, 0-3-1 GNAC) will look to rebound on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to New England College for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
