NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College men's soccer team came up short in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 5-0 decision to Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at Alumni Field.
The Monks capitalized early, striking in the 13th minute and adding two more goals before halftime to take a 3-0 advantage into the break. Saint Joseph's tacked on two additional tallies in the second half to secure the road victory.
Mitchell generated eight shots in the match, including three on target. Junior Chris Costa (Bayport, N.Y.) led the Mariners with four attempts, while freshman Jo'metrius Davis (Columbus, Ga.) and sophomore Gabe Ansani (Trumbull, Conn.) each added looks on frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Gabriel Tiene (Fairfield, Conn.) faced heavy pressure throughout the contest and finished with seven saves while going the full 90 minutes in net.
Despite being outshit 23-8, the Mariners also made their presence felt in the midfield and defensive third, earning five corner kicks on the afternoon compared to one for the visitors.
Mitchell (1-7-1, 0-2-1 GNAC) will return to action on Wednesday, October 1, when it travels to Elms College for a GNAC showdown at 7 p.m.
